Brandi Pena Since I can remember, I have always loved to draw and paint. The first person to encourage me to take my interest in art seriously was my fourth grade art teacher who took me under her wing. Showing me different ways to use color and form, under her tutelage I began creating things that most of my childhood friends and family didn’t like or seem to understand. Ms. Maines was always supportive and I was ecstatic when I won the top award for pastel drawing. For me art became a way to express my deepest emotions and doodling became as natural as breathing. While studying abroad in France, as a sophomore, I had the invaluable opportunity to visit historic & cultural Paris: the Louvre, Versailles, Montmartre, and others, which broadened my awareness and deepened my appreciation for the arts. I also had the experience of interning at a local art gallery and was able assist with exhibit preparation, which gave me an early inside view of the art business. In my later high school years my interest ran hot and cold. Sometimes you couldn’t detach me from my drawing pad, yet at other times I wouldn’t touch a pencil to draw or paintbrush for months at a time. It was also during this period that I broadened my creative inclinations to include the performing arts. After attending modeling school and successfully competing in pageants, I became involved in the dramatic arts and ultimately acquired agency representation and began receiving commercial modeling and acting work. |
